Oat and Banana Blueberry Pancakes for Family + Dogs

Light, Healthy, and Totally Dog-Friendly!

Hey friends and fellow dog lovers! Thanks so much for stopping by today. You’re in for a treat—literally.

This recipe started with a simple request from my husband. He wanted blueberry pancakes. Something light, healthy, and not too fussy. So, I reached for a few pantry staples—bananas, oats, eggs, milk, and blueberries—and tossed them into the blender. That was it.

These pancakes are adapted from a recipe by Shanthi Appelö, MS, RD, a registered dietitian and wellness spokesperson for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. I love how her recipe uses wholesome, dog-safe ingredients (like oats) and skips anything artificial or unnecessary.

Not exactly a shock—James T. will eat almost anything —but these pancakes got some serious tail wags. Turns out they’re not only perfect for a cozy breakfast for two, but totally safe to share with your dog. No baking powder, no baking soda—just real, whole ingredients.

So, what began as a blueberry breakfast request turned into a win-win for the whole family.

🍓 Delicious Toppings & Pairings

For extra creaminess and protein, top your pancakes with a dollop of Greek yogurt. You can sweeten it naturally with a bit of maple syrup or a drop of vanilla extract. If you’re feeling fancy, a light sprinkle of lemon zest adds a refreshing touch—but remember, that’s just for humans!

Here’s how I love serving them:

  • 🥣 Greek yogurt adds creaminess and protein.
  • 🍁 Maple syrup or a drop of vanilla extract for natural sweetness.
  • 🍓 Fresh fruit like strawberries, blackberries, or banana slices—no syrup needed.
  • 🌿 Lemon zest (only for humans!) for a burst of freshness.

For your pup, serve the pancakes plain as shown below, or with a dollop of plain yogurt—no lemon zest. James T. says that’s perfect just the way it is!

🧊 Leftovers? No Problem.

  • Refrigerate: Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Freeze: Freeze in a single layer, then store in a zip-top bag. Reheat in a toaster or pan.

These are awesome for batch cooking and pulling out when you need a quick breakfast or dog-safe snack.

These Oat and Banana Blueberry Pancakes are easy, healthy, and make mornings just a little more joyful—especially when you get to share with your furry sidekick. Perfect for weekends, meal prep, or anytime you want a feel-good breakfast that’s light and satisfying.

  1. Funny you reference dogs, because my sister-in-law serves their two dogs the exact same food they eat, with only modifications due to diet…I love that you cook for the entire family!

  2. Something I never thought of doing, but will do in the future-is halving the blueberries. I’m so pleased to see James T eating some of your delicious food! 🙂
