Sweet Fried Plantains with Sautéed Onions: A Simple, Irresistible Side Dish

Welcome back, folks! I’m thrilled you stopped by today because we’re diving into a dish that’s as versatile as it is delicious: sweet fried plantains with sautéed onions. This quick and easy recipe is a go-to in my kitchen, whether I’m looking for a side to brighten up a Caribbean-inspired dinner, pair with Latin rice and beans, or even serve alongside scrambled eggs for a hearty breakfast. Trust me, this one’s a keeper!

Imagine biting into golden, caramelized plantains, their sweet, melt-in-your-mouth texture balanced by the savory richness of tender, slightly crispy onions. Sounds dreamy, right? And the best part? You’ll only need a few ingredients and minimal prep time to whip this up.

Why You’ll Love Sweet Fried Plantains with Onions

This dish hits all the right notes:

  • Convenience: Using frozen fried plantains means no peeling or frying from scratch. Just heat and go!
  • Flavor-packed: The combination of sweet plantains and savory onions creates a mouthwatering harmony that’s incredibly satisfying.
  • Versatility: Whether it’s a side dish for your African or Latin meals, a snack on its own, or a breakfast treat with eggs, these plantains effortlessly fit in anywhere.
  • Minimal effort: With no fancy techniques or hard-to-find ingredients, this is perfect for busy weeknights or casual meals.

The Star Ingredients

  1. Sweet Plantains: Using pre-fried, frozen plantains makes this recipe unbelievably easy while keeping that authentic caramelized sweetness. I swear by Goya’s brand—always reliable!
  2. Onions: Sautéed onions add a rich, savory contrast, making each bite balanced and deeply flavorful.
  3. Seasonings: A pinch of salt and pepper is all you need, but a sprinkle of cinnamon or red pepper flakes can add an extra layer of flavor if you’re feeling adventurous.

How It Comes Together

The process is as simple as it gets. While the plantains heat up in the microwave, slice an onion into half-moon pieces and toss them into a skillet with a bit of oil. Sauté until they’re soft, golden, and just starting to caramelize. Then, add the warmed plantains to the skillet, season to taste, and let them mingle for a few minutes. That’s it—quick, flavorful perfection!

Tips to Elevate the Flavor

  • Add a touch of nutmeg or cinnamon for a sweet-spicy twist.
  • Garnish with toasted coconut flakes for a tropical vibe.
  • Experiment with ghee or coconut oil instead of vegetable oil for a richer flavor profile.

This dish is not just a side—it’s an experience. Serve it with a comforting stew, next to a big pile of scrambled eggs, or as a snack straight from the pan (I won’t judge!). Once you try it, you’ll see why sweet fried plantains with sautéed onions deserve a permanent spot in your meal rotation.

Course: Breakfast, dinner, lunch, Main Course, Side Dish, Snack
Cuisine: #African,, #Carribean, #Latin, Puerto Rican

Ingredients

  • 1 Large sweet onion
  • 1 11 oz. package frozen fried plantains (Found in my grocery store's frozen food section. Goya brand is best.)
  • 2 Tbs Vegetable oil for frying (Any neutral oil)
  • salt and pepper to taste

Method

  1. Peel and slice the onion in half. Slice into half-moon slices, not too thin or they will disintegrate and get stringy.
  2. Microwave frozen plantains according to package directions.
  3. Heat oil in a skillet or wok over medium to medium-high heat. Sauté the onions for 3-4 minutes until they become translucent.
  4. Once the plantains are finished in the microwave, add them to the onions in the skillet. Season with a bit salt, and pepper, or your preferred seasonings. Continue to sauté for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until reaching your desired level of doneness.

Notes

Common Spices to Elevate Flavor:
    • Cinnamon: Sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon on top of fried plantains for a delightful hint of sweetness and warmth.
    • Nutmeg: Freshly grated nutmeg adds subtle earthiness and a slightly nutty flavor.
    • Spicy red pepper flakes or cayenne.
    • Coconut flakes sprinkled on top as a garnish.
I have yet to experiment with ghee or coconut oil in this dish. While these oils may impart a different flavor profile, they could potentially elevate the dish in new and interesting ways. If you decide to give it a try, I would love to hear about your experience and any flavor enhancements you discover.
