So you have a cabbage lying around and no idea what to make with it. Turn it into this delicious pie!
This old-fashioned recipe has stood the test of time. Fresh-tasting, light, and versatile as a vegetarian main dish or side dish, you’ll be making this on repeat! As Mr. Yoon from my favorite Korean restaurant would say about cabbage, it’s good for the knees! I hope you enjoy this recipe. I am excited to hear from you about the many ways to customize this dish to suit your tastes. Please let me know in the comments—I really love hearing from you!

One of the recent comments on my YouTube channel mentioned that this dish is strikingly similar to Okonomiyaki, a frittata-like savory Japanese pancake with a cabbage hashbrown-like texture. I also think this dish resembles pajeon, a Korean pancake from the restaurant I frequent. After talking with Mr. Yoon, I got the idea to make this pie, which is an old Iowa, super-simplified version of a tasty Korean Kimchi Pork Pancake and this Healthy Cabbage Casserole that you should try next!
Old-Fashioned Cabbage Pie
Ingredients
Method
- Place the cabbage, onion, parsley, carrot (if using) and seasonings in a large bowl. Toss to combine. Pour the beaten eggs over the mixture and toss to coat evenly. Sprinkle the flour over the mixture and toss again to ensure everything is well-coated.
- Warm the vegetable oil in a 10-inch non-stick skillet over medium-low heat. Add the cabbage mixture and press it down with a spatula. Use the spatula to shape the mixture into a round, pie-like form. Cover the skillet and cook until the bottom is richly browned, approximately 10 minutes.
- To flip the pie, place a large plate over the top of the pie in the skillet. Carefully invert the skillet and plate together, so that the cooked side of the pie is now facing up on the plate. Slide the pie back into the skillet to fry the other side. Cook, covered, until fully cooked, approximately 7 minutes. Finally, slide the pie onto a plate or serving platter, cut it into wedges, and enjoy!
