Dates with Espresso Coffee and Cardamom

Embark on a culinary journey with my latest creation inspired by the cultural richness of Oman and crafted by the renowned duo, Sam & Sam Clark. Celebrated for their London tapas gems Moro and Morito, as well as their Mediterranean culinary expertise showcased in various cookbooks, the Clarks bring you a tantalizing fusion of flavors: Dates with Espresso and Cardamom.

Drawing inspiration from the warmth of Omani hospitality, where dates and cardamom coffee are shared as gestures of welcome and camaraderie, this recipe promises a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation. Indulge in the sweetness of sticky dates paired with the bold aroma of espresso infused with fragrant cardamom.

For an extra touch of indulgence, I recommend pairing this delightful treat with Italian Amaretti Cookies. The chewy texture and nutty flavor of the cookies perfectly complement the richness of the dates and espresso, elevating your culinary experience to new heights.

Ingredients

  • 400 g dates, preferably Medjool
  • 6 cardamom pos
  • 510 ml espresso or extremely strong black coffee (I brewed express coffee from K-cups. Option to add 1 serving of instant espresso powder for a bolder kick * picture above.)
  • 1 tsp caster sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick broken in half
  • Greek yogurt, to serve Use a high-quality, full-fat Greek yogurt, such as organic Stonyfield, for optimal results and flavor.
  • mascarpone for serving (optional)

Method

  1. Stone the dates carefully to keep their shape or purchase dates without pits. Put the dates in a bowl.
  2. Lightly crush the cardamom pods in a pestle and mortar. (I purchased fresh cardamom from a local Indian grocer.)
  3. Heat the coffee, sugar, cardamom and cinnamon in a saucepan until nearly boiling.
  4. Pour over the dates and leave to cool. Transfer to the fridge to chill. Drain the dates. Serve with Greek yogurt and or mascarpone.

Notes

You can also drain and serve the dates with mascarpone for spreading. Enjoy!

You can reserve the coffee to drink, diluted a bit with water if needed — it’s naturally sweet from the dates!
